Scotland’s deep and storied past is closely linked to one of its most influential families—the Royal Clan Stewart. The name Stewart began as an occupational title for those who managed noble households and oversaw their finances. It originates from the Old English term “stigweard,” combining “stig” (household) and “weard” (guardian). In medieval Scotland and England, stewards served lords, earls, and bishops, which led to the name becoming widespread and forming many distinct family lines.
The Stewart surname began appearing in official Scottish records during the 13th century, marking the shift from occupation to family name. The lineage of the Royal Stewarts can be traced to a noble Breton family known as Flaald, giving the name its Anglo-Norman heritage. Alan, a knight from this family, was among the first to bring the name to Britain when he settled in Oswestry, Shropshire.
