MacKenzie Tartan
Ancient from Houston
The MacKenzie surname has its origins in the ancient Dalriadan-Scottish name Mac Coinnich or Mac Choinnich, meaning “son of Coinneach.” The personal name Coinneach—also rendered as Cainnechus in early texts such as those by Adamnan—is derived from the Gaelic word cann, meaning “fair” or “bright.” In this sense, the surname likely began as a descriptive nickname before evolving into a hereditary family name.
The MacKenzies have deep roots in Ross-shire, a historic county in the north of Scotland, now part of the modern Council Areas of the Highlands and Western Isles. The family established their stronghold within the Gaelic lordship ruled by the Earl of Ross, and their name appears in some of the earliest census rolls used by Scottish monarchs for tax and administrative records.
The Clan MacKenzie is associated with two mottos. The first, “Luceo non uro,” translates to “I shine, not burn,” symbolising strength and control. The second, “Sic itur ad astra,” means “Such is the way to immortality,” reflecting ambition and honour.
