The Clanranald branch of the MacDonell or MacDonald family is part of the largest of the Highland clans, tracing its ancestry to Ranald, the son of John, Lord of the Isles. At its height, the Lordship of the Isles was a powerful autonomous realm with its own parliament and influence strong enough to rival the Scottish Crown. Clanranald’s territory was centred along the rugged northwest coast of Scotland.
During the Wars of Scottish Independence, the MacDonalds pledged their support to Robert the Bruce. Following their valour at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, King Robert rewarded Clan Donald with the prestigious position on the right flank of the Scottish army—a place of great honour in battle formations.
The clan later played significant roles in both the 1715 and 1745 Jacobite uprisings. When Bonnie Prince Charlie arrived in Scotland in 1745, he landed in Clanranald lands. Following his defeat at the Battle of Culloden, it was the brave Flora MacDonald—connected to the clan—who famously helped him flee to the Isle of Skye.
The clan is known by two mottos: “Per mare per terras”—meaning “By sea and by land”—and “My hope is constant in thee.”
