    Campbell Tartan

    Ancient from Houston

The Campbell name has its roots among the Strathclyde Britons who once lived along the Scottish-English border. The surname originated from a descriptive nickname given to someone with a crooked mouth or distinctive smile, derived from the Gaelic words “cam” (crooked) and “beul” (mouth). Such nicknames, often based on appearance, mannerisms, or behaviour, were commonly adopted as surnames over time.

Historically, the Campbell family became established in Argyllshire—part of the ancient Kingdom of Dál Riata in what is now western Scotland. This area corresponds to the modern Council Area of Argyll and Bute. Some historians suggest the Campbells and MacArthurs share a common ancestry, with the MacArthurs believed to be the elder branch. The name Arthur is thought to originate from the son of King Aedan MacGabhran, ruler of Argyll in the 9th century. The Campbell clan was also known as Siol Diarmaid an Tuirc, or Clan Duibhne. In a royal charter dated 1368, Duncan MacDuibhne was officially acknowledged as the forebear of the Lords of Lochow.

Sir Colin Campbell, son of Sir Archibald, was succeeded in 1427 by Sir Duncan. Sir Duncan’s second son, known as Black Colin of Glenorchy, went on to establish the Campbells of Breadalbane and built Caolchurn Castle. Through his marriage to Margaret Stewart, heiress to the Lords of Lorn, the Campbells further extended their influence. Following the defeat of the MacDonalds at the Battle of Harlaw in 1411, the Campbells took the opportunity to claim additional lands and strengthen their position.

In 1517, the Crown called upon the Campbells and the MacLeans of Duart to quell the rebellion of MacDonald of Lochalsh, a claimant to the Lordship of the Isles who had captured two royal castles. MacDonald was executed, and the Campbells gained further territory and favour. Their leaders were frequently honoured with titles including knighthoods, baronies, and earldoms. The Earl of Argyll, in particular, rose to prominence as Chancellor of Scotland during the reign of James IV and was instrumental in bringing greater stability to the Highlands.

Clan Campbell is known for several mottos, the most recognised being “Ne Obliviscaris”, which translates to “Forget Not.”
