Anderson Tartan
Muted from House of Edgar
The surname Anderson has its origins in the Scottish Highlands, particularly in the regions of the Great Glen and Strathspey. The family traces its roots to Mac Ghille Andreis, meaning “servant of St. Andrew,” who is the patron saint of Scotland. The Andersons are recognised as a sept of Clan Chattan and have been associated with this historic confederation of clans since the 15th century.
Although the Anderson name is deeply rooted in Scottish heritage, branches of the family did eventually settle further south. Notably, in the parish of Eyworth in Bedfordshire, a manor once owned by the Leybourns eventually passed to the Charlton and Francis families. During Queen Elizabeth I’s reign, the estate became home to Sir Edmund Anderson, Lord Chief Justice of the Common Pleas. He is remembered for his role in the trial of Mary, Queen of Scots. Today, the local church in Eyworth houses several distinguished memorials dedicated to members of the Anderson family and other notable figures.
The Anderson clan motto is “Stand Sure”—a phrase reflecting steadfastness and loyalty.
